The Basics
Moonball is...
- played on a pickleball court with a pickleball net
- played with a large, lightweight ball using just your hands (and feet!)
- played 1-on-1 or 2-on-2
To serve the ball, you must...
- stand anywhere (no need to go behind the baseline!)
- hit the ball so that it bounces once on your side of the court and then goes over the net
To return the serve, you must...
- wait for the ball to also bounce on your side
- hit the ball back over the net
Exception: You can volley the serve (not wait for it to bounce) if you are behind the
non-volley line (7 feet back from the net)
Then just keep playing!
- games to 10 points
- whoever wins the point serves the next ball
- must win by 2 points
- no "kitchen" rule after the serve - hit the ball out of the air or let it bounce once

History of the Game
The game originates from the love of the schoolyard game "four-square". But what do you do when you don't have 4 players? Invent a new game of course!
We called it Alleyball, and we played it in the alley behind our house in Winnipeg. Back then, the game was played with no net. What could go wrong??
The childhood house is gone, but the alley remains!
